Quoted from Gadgets Now, Wikipedia was co-founded with Larry Singer and other friends in 2001. Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001 and has grown quickly into a free information presentation service.
"Imagine a world where everyone can get all the available knowledge, that's what we do," he said in an interview with Slashdot.

With page views so high, Wikipedia actually has the potential to rake in ad money. But from the beginning, Jimmy rejected the idea of advertising. And until now, Wikipedia has survived with sincere donations from the users.

"We never considered putting up advertisements. In our directors' meeting, the topic also never appeared," Wales said. He stated, the main purpose of Wikipedia is to provide free access to all human knowledge.
