Ariane 2 is a European expendable (disposable) rocket, which was used for six launches between 1986 and 1989. It was a member of the Ariane rocket family, and was produced by Aérospatiale in France.
Ariane 2 comes from Ariane 1 before, by stretching the first and third stages. The load capacity becomes 2,175 kilograms (4795 pounds) into geosynchronous transfer orbit. It first flew on 31 May 1986 carrying the Intelsat-5A F-14 satellite. The third stage failed to turn on, and the rocket was destroyed by safety range. After this, five more launches were carried out, all of which were successful. The last launch of Ariane 2 took place on April 2, 1989, successfully placing Tele-X into orbit.
